Cincinnati Solar Zoo Open to Public

In May 2011 the Cincinnati Zoo opened a 1.56 megawatt solar canopy at the Cincinnati Zoo – making the “Greenest Zoo in America” home to the largest photovoltaic array open to the public. Over 6,400 solar panels were used in the project that will not only provide 20% of the energy needs for the zoo, but will provide acres of covered parking as well. Over 150 representatives from Cincinnati solar manufacturers, installers – as well public officials – attended the dedication ceremony.

Ohio Senator Rob Portman noted, “It’s good to see local firms participate in the engineering and construction of what is now the largest, privately owned solar array in Ohio, and the largest urban, publicly accessible array in the United States.” He added that the Cincinnati solar industry and local officials should be proud of their accomplishments.

Cincinnati Solar Industry Expands

Installations of solar energy systems grew by a whopping 102% in 2010, and are poised to grow by another 100% in 2011. Those involved in the Cincinnati solar and wind industries see no reason that the region cannot mirror national trends.

Hubbert Co, a Harrison-based distribution company, recently announced plans to install 3,840 PV panels at its Dry Fork Road facility, making it the largest rooftop installation thus far for the emerging Cincinnati solar industry.

Plans also for a Cincinnati Solar UV Project

For the city of Cincinnati solar electric energy is not the only way they hope to capture the power of the sun. Construction is currently underway at the Greater Cincinnati Water Works’ (GCWW) Richard Miller Treatment Plant to install Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection treatment technology. This technology uses the ultraviolet light from the sun to kill harmful bacteria contained in drinking water sources.

In an effort to make the project even more environmentally sustainable for the citizens of Cincinnati solar electric power panels will be installed on top of the treatment facility to provide the energy required to make the system operate.

Third Sun Expands Cincinnati Solar Offices

For the third straight year, Third Sun Solar has been ranked in Inc. Magazine’s list of the nation’s fastest growing companies. Rated as Ohio’s 12th fastest growing company, with increased revenues of 619% over the three year period, owners Michelle and Geoff Greenfield view the company’s expansion within the Cincinnati solar marketplace as a continuation of this growth.
